Xbox Controller Test

Test an Xbox Series, Xbox One or Elite Series 2 controller in your browser: buttons, bumpers, both sticks with a drift test, trigger travel and rumble.

Waiting for a controller
Connect it by USB or Bluetooth, then press any button. The browser only shows a pad once a button has been pressed.

Connect by USB-C or micro USB, or pair over Bluetooth with the pairing button on top. Chrome and Edge on a computer show Xbox pads straight away. Everything runs locally in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How to use the xbox controller test

1

Connect the pad. Use a USB cable, or hold the pairing button until the Xbox logo flashes and pair it in your computer settings. Press any button so the page can see it.

2

Press every button. Face buttons, the D-pad, both bumpers, both stick clicks, View, Menu, Share and the Xbox button. Each one lights while held.

3

Pull the triggers. LT and RT should climb smoothly from empty to full. Bumpers are a common Xbox fault, so press each one from both ends and check it registers every time.

4

Run the drift and vibration tests. Put the pad down and press Test for drift, then press Vibration test to fire the main motors.

What the results mean

Stick resting off centre. Over 5 per cent is drift. Xbox stick modules are replaceable and a Hall effect or TMR module stops it recurring.

Bumper that only works from one end. The bumper hinge or its microswitch has worn. A very common Xbox One and Series fault, and a straightforward bench repair.

Trigger bar that never reaches full. A worn trigger sensor or a cracked trigger arm. Both are fixed by replacing the part.

No vibration. Check the browser and connection first. Over USB in Chrome with no response, a motor or its cable is at fault. Trigger rumble is not exposed by browsers, so test that on the console.

Pad drops connection. Usually the battery contacts, the pairing radio or, on wired pads, the USB port. Try fresh batteries or a different cable before assuming the pad.

Xbox controller faults we see most

Stick drift, bumpers that stop clicking, worn triggers and ports that only charge at an angle make up most of the Xbox pads on our bench. Elite Series 2 pads add paddle and lock switch faults. All are fixed at Kings Cross or by post, with a 12-month warranty on the parts we fit. See the Xbox controller repair prices.

Xbox controller test: your questions answered

Does it work with the Elite Series 2?−

Yes. The four paddles register as extra buttons and the profile switch is ignored by the browser, which is normal.

Why do the triggers not vibrate?+

Browsers only expose the two main motors. The trigger motors are driven by the console and cannot be tested here.

The Xbox button opens the Game Bar on Windows+

That is Windows claiming the button. Press any other button to wake the pad, then test the Xbox button with the Game Bar closed.

Can I test an Xbox 360 pad?+

A wired 360 pad works. Wireless 360 pads need the Microsoft receiver and then show up as a standard pad.

Is anything uploaded?+

No. Everything happens in your browser.
