Look at the battery indicator, on the top right of your MacBook’s display. If there’s an ‘X’ in it, or if the indicator never reaches 100% when the power is plugged in, you’re in need of a new battery. Some MacBook models may also experience the ‘jumping cursor of doom’: a cursor that randomly moves to different parts of a document, or even starts deleting text when you haven’t touched the trackpad.

Quick draining of the battery without a power cord attached is another sign that your MacBook is in need of a battery replacement. On Macs running older versions of OS X, you can click on the battery icon to determine the condition. Recent versions of OS X allow you to view the cycle count of your battery. Cycle count is the number of times your battery has been completely drained and recharged. Modern MacBooks are fitted with batteries that are expected to last for up to 1,000 cycles, so if yours is nearing this number you should be on the lookout for the other signs listed here.
