Dead Pixel Test

Cycle your screen through solid colours in full screen to find dead, stuck and bright pixels on a laptop, monitor, TV or phone.

FreeRuns in your browserNothing uploaded
Colours in the cycle
Tap a swatch to start on that colour. Click, tap or use the arrow keys to move through the cycle. Esc leaves the test.
Runs on any screen this browser is on, including an external monitor or TV if you drag the window there first.

Full screen needs a click or tap to start. On iPhone the test covers the page instead, because iOS does not let web pages go full screen. Everything runs locally in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How to use the dead pixel test

1

Clean the screen first. A speck of dust looks exactly like a dead pixel. Wipe the panel with a soft cloth and dim the room lights if you can.

2

Start the full-screen test. The page fills with solid white, then black, red, green, blue and grey. Click, tap or press the right arrow to move on, the left arrow to go back and Esc to leave.

3

Look corner to corner on each colour. A dead pixel shows as a black dot on the bright colours. A stuck pixel shows as a dot of the wrong colour, such as a red dot on the green screen. A bright pixel shows as a white dot on black.

4

Try the flasher on a stuck pixel. It rapidly cycles colours in a small square that follows your pointer, so you can park it over the pixel for a few minutes. Some stuck sub-pixels free up with this. Dead pixels never do.

What the results mean

Dead pixel. The sub-pixels no longer switch on, so it stays black on every colour. It cannot be revived, and manufacturers only replace panels above their own threshold of dead pixels, which varies by brand.

Stuck pixel. One or two sub-pixels are held on, so it shows red, green, blue or a mix. The flasher frees a share of these. Gentle pressure through a soft cloth sometimes helps, but do not press hard on a laptop panel.

Bright or hot pixel. All sub-pixels stuck on, showing white on the black screen. Treat it like a stuck pixel and try the flasher.

Lines, clusters or patches. A column or row of dead pixels, or a growing dark patch, is a panel or ribbon fault rather than a single pixel. The grey screen also shows backlight bleed along the edges and uneven brightness across the panel.

When to replace the screen

A single dead pixel in a corner is a cosmetic issue on most panels. Lines, clusters, cracks or a spreading black area mean the panel is failing, and on a laptop the sensible answer is a new screen. We fit laptop screens for all the main brands at our Kings Cross workshop, usually the same or next day when the panel is in stock, with an exact quote before any work.

Dead pixel test: your questions answered

What is the difference between a dead pixel and a stuck pixel?−

A dead pixel is off on every colour and shows black. A stuck pixel is on all the time and shows a single colour. Stuck pixels sometimes recover. Dead pixels do not.

Can the flasher damage my screen?+

No. It only changes the colour of a small area very quickly, which is the same thing the display does whenever you play a video.

Why does the test not go full screen on my iPhone?+

iOS Safari does not allow web pages to enter full screen, so the tester covers the page instead. Tap to change colour. The browser bars stay visible, which is a limit of the phone rather than the test.

How many dead pixels are acceptable under warranty?+

Each manufacturer sets its own threshold, usually based on the number and position of faulty pixels. Check the panel policy for your brand before claiming, and photograph the defect on a solid colour.

Is this test safe for OLED screens?+

Yes. The solid colours are shown briefly and are no different from normal use. Avoid leaving a bright static colour on an OLED for a long period.
